Meet Sarah Kendall: The Visionary Behind Seamless Property Management and PropTech Solutions.

Cat

How long have you been in the real estate industry, and how did you get started?

I started as a Leasing Agent at a multifamily property in 2010, the same way most Leasing Agents do – by pure chance. While signing my lease to move back into a property I previously lived in, I asked what it takes to get into the property management industry. A few weeks later, I got a call from the Property Manager asking if I wanted to interview for a job. I’ve worked in property management ever since.

Several promotions on-site led me to a Property Manager role, and I later moved to corporate as a national Operations Trainer. During this time, I tag-teamed Yardi’s Voyager 6 to 7 transition with our IT leader. That project gave me a glimpse of how customizable software can be and how small tweaks can create significant operational improvements. Shortly after, I moved to Software Support. I worked extensively with all sides of the business to support, implement, and train on various software platforms. Later roles involved heavy interaction with emerging PropTech companies while leading all Yardi implementations, help desk support, account management, procedures, and enhancements. Consulting was a natural next step.

In your daily role, what drives you? Where do you draw inspiration to achieve your goals?

Simple solutions. I have seen both good and bad examples of property management operations, accounting, project management, training, marketing, support, software selection, implementations, acquisitions/dispositions, and reporting. Watching ineffective systems or processes hinder people instead of helping them has always frustrated me. Additionally, I grew up in the industry alongside the PropTech boom, which made everyday procedures both simpler and more complex. There’s no doubt that property management is complicated – even the smallest changes can create a significant domino effect. Despite the complexities of the industry, the most successful processes are simple. I enjoy examining the hardest problems from multiple perspectives to find and implement the simplest, most maintainable solutions so that software can support everyday functions instead of disrupting them.

What is the biggest challenge facing property management today?

Staffing. Working on-site is a challenging job, and it has only become more difficult in recent years. Between COVID, the political atmosphere, the housing affordability crisis, and more people working from home all day, what was already a conflict-heavy job has become even more pressured. I’m always assessing how corporate-level decisions impact on-site teams to evaluate the realism of each solution and timeline.

BC Solutions' tagline is “Yardi Customized to Meet Your Needs.” What does that mean to you?

Every property management company has its own ‘secret sauce’ to stay ahead of the competition, but many only tailor marketing and training materials to their brand. Yardi can be customized in countless ways to fully support how each client does business, often without the need for additional outside software. At BC Solutions, we’ve built a team that knows how to bend the software without breaking it and can optimize almost every aspect of property management. This allows our clients to maximize their software value and automate processes while staying aligned with their brand and culture.

What’s your favorite animal?

I love both cats and dogs and am making good progress in becoming a full-fledged cat lady. My cat Marshmallow loves joining video calls to share his opinion. He has joined enough calls to have a small, unofficial fan club made up of clients and Yardi team members.
